Lunar New Year is kept in China, Vietnam, Korea and well beyond, and by families all over the UK. It falls on a new moon between 21 January and 20 February, and the celebrations run for days: a reunion meal on the eve, red envelopes for the children, and a house made ready for a lucky year.
Red and gold are the colours of luck and they are everywhere. Orchids and blossom are favourite flowers for the new year, and mandarins and oranges stand for good fortune, so a bunch in citrus colours fits too. White is the colour of mourning, so it is left out.
