Chrysanthemum Bloom
“cheerfulness and friendship”
Cultivated in China for well over two thousand years and honoured in Japan as the imperial flower, the chrysanthemum stands in the British language of flowers for cheerfulness, friendship and long life. White chrysanthemums carry the particular meaning of truth and loyal love, and in much of continental Europe the flower is reserved for remembrance, which makes it a fitting choice for sympathy as well as celebration. Bloom varieties, grown one generous head to a stem, show the flower at its most sculptural.
In season, and in the studio
Chrysanthemum Bloom is in season all year round, so it is in the studio this month. In the studio's bunches it is a focal flower: the one a bunch is built around, with the others chosen to frame it. The studio buys it in white, bronze and green, and at the bench each colour is read for its own meaning.
