Gerbera
“cheerfulness and innocence”
A member of the daisy family from South Africa, the gerbera is named after the eighteenth-century German naturalist Traugott Gerber. In the language of flowers it carries the daisy's meanings of innocence and cheerfulness, and its broad, open face has made it shorthand for uncomplicated happiness. One of the world's most popular cut flowers, it holds its colour and shape remarkably well in the vase.
In season, and in the studio
Gerbera is in season all year round, so it is in the studio this month. In the studio's bunches it is a focal flower: the one a bunch is built around, with the others chosen to frame it. The studio buys it in coral, cream and hot pink, and at the bench each colour is read for its own meaning.
