Delphiniums take their name from the Greek 'delphis', meaning dolphin, after the shape of the unopened buds. In the language of flowers they stand for an open heart, ardent attachment and a certain lightness of spirit, and as the birth flower of July they carry a note of high-summer cheer. Their towering spires are a mainstay of the English cottage garden, prized for offering some of the truest blues in the flower world.
In season, and in the studio
Delphinium is in season May to August; it is not in the studio in September, and a bunch asked for it then is offered the nearest stem instead. In the studio's bunches it is a secondary flower, the supporting cast that gives a bunch its shape and rhythm around the focal stem. The studio buys it in sky blue, white and deep blue, and at the bench each colour is read for its own meaning.
