“anticipation”
The anemone takes its name from the Greek anemos, meaning wind, which is why its old English name is the windflower, said to open only when the wind blows. In Greek myth it sprang up where Aphrodite wept for Adonis, which gave the red anemone its lasting association with love and remembrance. In floriography it stands for anticipation: the sense of something lovely about to happen.
In season, and in the studio
Anemone is in season November to May; it is not in the studio in September, and a bunch asked for it then is offered the nearest stem instead. In the studio's bunches it is a focal flower: the one a bunch is built around, with the others chosen to frame it. The studio buys it in white, deep blue and red, and at the bench each colour is read for its own meaning.
