“everlasting love and innocence”

Better known as baby's breath, gypsophila stands for everlasting love and innocence of heart, which is why it has attended weddings and christenings for well over a century. Its botanical name comes from the Greek for gypsum, a nod to the chalky soils it favours. Long typecast as a supporting act for roses, it has come back into fashion in its own right, massed into soft white clouds.

In season, and in the studio

Gypsophila is in season all year round, so it is in the studio this month. In the studio's bunches it is texture: the airy, spiky, odd detail that gives a hand-tied its character between the bigger heads. The studio buys it in white, and at the bench each colour is read for its own meaning.
