Astrantia takes its name from the Latin for star, a nod to the papery ruff of bracts that frames each pincushion bloom. Grown in English gardens since Tudor times under the old name masterwort, it traditionally symbolises strength, courage and protection. It rewards a closer look, which is why florists love it: understated at arm's length, intricate up close.
