Limonium

“remembrance and lasting memory”

Limonium, sold as statice or sea lavender, grows wild on salt marshes and sea cliffs, and its name comes from the Greek for meadow. Its papery blooms hold their colour almost indefinitely when dried, which earned it the floriography meanings of remembrance and memory that never fades; the Victorians also linked it with success and sympathy. That durability makes it as useful in everlasting arrangements as in fresh ones.

In season, and in the studio

Limonium is in season all year round, so it is in the studio this month. In the studio's bunches it is texture: the airy, spiky, odd detail that gives a hand-tied its character between the bigger heads. The studio buys it in lilac and white, and at the bench each colour is read for its own meaning.
